DuffMate is an independent Apple Watch and iPhone golf app. This policy explains what data DuffMate uses, why, and where it goes. The short version: your golf data stays on your devices. There are no DuffMate accounts, no DuffMate servers storing your rounds, no tracking, and nothing is sold.

The short version

  • Your rounds, scores, and stats are stored on your iPhone and Apple Watch and sync directly between them. We don't keep a copy.
  • DuffMate has no user accounts and no analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind.
  • DuffMate makes only two kinds of outside requests: to get the weather for your round, and to look up golf courses. Both use your location for that purpose only.
  • We never use your health, motion, or location data for advertising, and we never sell it.

Information DuffMate uses

Location (GPS)

DuffMate uses your location to measure distance to the green, record where you took each shot (for your shot map), sort nearby courses, and look up local weather. Location is used while you're using the app.

Motion and fitness data

DuffMate reads your Apple Watch's motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) to detect golf swings and count your shots. This processing happens on your Watch and is not transmitted anywhere.

Health (workout) data

To keep tracking active during a round, DuffMate starts an Apple workout session and saves it as a golf workout in Apple Health on your device. DuffMate writes this workout; it does not read any of your health data. Your Health data stays in Apple Health, under your control — DuffMate never sends it anywhere.

Round and golf data

Your scores, putts, shot positions, drive distances, and course selections are created on your devices as you play.

Where your data is stored

Your rounds and settings are stored locally on your iPhone and Apple Watch. The two devices sync this data directly to each other using Apple's WatchConnectivity, the same secure device-to-device channel Apple provides for paired devices. DuffMate does not operate servers that store your round data, and we do not have a copy of it.

When data leaves your device (third-party services)

DuffMate contacts only two outside services, and only for the purposes below:

  1. Weather — Open-Meteo. To show wind and temperature for your round, DuffMate sends your approximate location (latitude and longitude) to Open-Meteo, a weather service. No name, account, or device identifier is attached.
  2. Course lookup — golfapi.io. To find and load your course, DuffMate sends your course search and approximate location to golfapi.io, a golf course database, to return course details and hole layouts.

That is the complete list of outbound data from DuffMate.

What DuffMate does not do

  • No accounts or logins. You don't create an account to use DuffMate.
  • No analytics or tracking. DuffMate includes no analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking software of any kind.
  • No selling or sharing of your data. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data.
  • No advertising use of sensitive data. We never use health, motion, or location data for advertising or data-mining.

Permissions you control

DuffMate asks for permission to use Location, Motion & Fitness, and to save a Workout to Health. You can grant or revoke any of these any time in your iPhone and Apple Watch Settings. Turning off a permission may limit features (for example, denying location turns off distance, the shot map, and wind).

Your data and deleting it

Because your data lives on your devices, you control it. You can edit or delete rounds in the DuffMate iPhone app, and deleting the app removes its data from that device. Any golf workouts saved to Apple Health are managed in the Health app.

Children

DuffMate is a general-audience golf app, is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we change how DuffMate handles data, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
